The first time you read this story is like if you have not read it at all, may be you could not find the meaning of it or may be you did not notice it represent something more that the things written in the that paper. When you read it at first what you can understand from this story is that there is this American men and this girl, both are in a train station waiting, obviously, for a train. They both decide to drink beer and then the girl start talking about hills that look like white elephants. When the girl start talking about white elephant I though that the girl was already drunk or drugged and was hallucinating or something like that, but then I start thinking about how one beer could manage that effect. Later the men said to the girl about a simple operation, that she would be find that she only have to let the air enter, and that other people have done it and after that they were happy. The men said to the girl that she did not have to go through the operation if she did not wanted but I though that deep inside he wanted . At the end of the story they are both ready to board the train that arrive in five minutes.
The conclusion that you could have from this story is that the American was a child lover and the girl was with him because of the money and they were both chunky and alcoholics and that the American wanted to use the girl as donkey to make her swallow drug and the opened her to extract the drug after reaching their destination.
But when you read for a second time and you find some signs that serve of analogies for the true meaning of the story. That's when I realized that the white hills that resemble like white elephant could meant that she was pregnant. But what confirmed my hypothesis was when the men talked about an operation and that she just have to let it in the air. I thought of a type of abortion that is made by suctioning the baby in a type of vacuum. And the hole conflict of the story is that she was having second thoughts about aborting the baby and the American was more in to the abortion than her. The story have and open ending and we could not know what kind of decision she take.
By the way the storing was flowing I assume that she abort the baby after they took the train but I do not think that they live happy ever after.

I thought that too lol I didn't knew what I was reading, just that the american and a girl where talking, drinking and waiting for some train and that didn't had any sense at all. The end of the reading they let us in doubt of what was happening and you had to decode it to understand just like you did... the white elefants as her belly and the operation as an abortion.
I was very confused after reading it too. But i though the guy was persuading her to have sex. The simple operation was the process to have the hills like white elephants that is her belly. Maybe I'm just a bit pervert.
hey Rey you did good analyzing the story because it was really confusin to me and to everyone and you did a great job finding does points in the story that give us the information to know the situation of abortion.
I agree in the part were you say that the story is very confusing because at first I had no idea what I was reading, but I disagree in the rest. I don't think the american was a child lover althought I do think he is mentally ill. Also I don't think that the he is going to use the girl as a donkey. I think that he just wanted to have sex with the girl.
